Stay Safe And Comfortable This Winter

Whether you’re using propane in your home for fire logs, cooktops, outdoor grills or to heat your water, you’ve chosen a clean, cost-effective and reliable energy solution that is helping our country shrink its carbon footprint. With cold weather on the way, you’ll be relying on your propane more in the coming months. That’s why we’re sharing this cold weather preparation checklist from the Propane Education and Research Council:

  • Maintain an adequate supply of propane in your tank. Call Palmetto Propane when your tank is at 30% so you can be prepared for a sever winter storm, which could impact propane deliveries.

  • Use energy wisely. Conserve propane in the event of winter storms by setting your programmable thermostat to as low as is comfortable, keeping it cooler at night and when nobody is home. Close off rooms that don’t need to be heated.

  • Allow appliances to vent properly. Clear snow and ice away from outdoor vents, chimneys and flues to prevent blocking any ventilation.

  • If you smell gas take the right steps. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones or mobile phones. Clear everyone from the area where you suspect leaking gas. If safe to do so shut off the gas valve by turning it to the right (clockwise) and call us immediately from a safe place to report the leak. If you cannot reach us call 911 and stay away from the area until a qualified technician or emergency responder gives the OK.

  • Never bring a gas grill indoors for space heating – even during power outages. Only use appliances indoors if they are approved for that purpose. Without proper ventilation, deadly carbon monoxide (CO) fumes can build up.

  • Operate portable generators with caution. Never use a portable generator (gasoline, diesel or propane) indoors or in enclosed areas. Doing so can result in carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning or death.
